Workshop 1: Latest Trends in Algebra and Geometry
The first GGI workshop, “Latest Trends in Algebra and Geometry”, will run 29th June-1st July. Please, check the workshop’s website.
Seminars
Because of the workshop, we will only run the daily seminars on Thursday and Friday.
Seminars take place in 4SW.6.6 from 11am. Tea and biscuits will be served in the same room from 10.30am.
Thursday 2nd July
Speaker: Matthew Westaway (University of Bath)
Title: Quantizations of Nilpotent Orbits
Abstract: Consider the adjoint action of a reductive algebraic group on its Lie algebra. Amongst the orbits of this action, the nilpotent orbits are those which are closed under (non-zero) scalar multiplication; their coordinate rings are thus graded Poisson algebras. For such algebras, a natural question is to classify their quantizations: non-commutative filtered algebras which recover the coordinate algebras as their associated graded algebras. Over the complex numbers, this classification has been completed using ideas from birational induction of nilpotent orbits. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress on generalising this classification to positive characteristic, especially in type A. This is based on joint work with Filippo Ambrosio and Lewis Topley.
Friday 3rd July
Speaker: Eamonn O’Brien (University of Auckland)
Title: Conjugacy in finite groups
Abstract: We report on an ongoing project to provide complete theoretical and practical solutions to conjugacy problems in finite groups.
Social activities
Tea and cakes will be served from 3pm on Thursday and Friday in 4SW.6.18.
On Monday 29th June in the afternoon we will run two social activities: a tour of Colchester and a football game (details TBC). Please, fill in the form that will be sent by e-mail to sign up.
On Tuesday 30th June we will have the workshop dinner. Please, fill in the form sent by e-mail to sign up.
